Bangkok is the capitol city of Thailand. Bangkok began centuries ago as a trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayuttaya Kingdom. It was made the capitol city of Siam in 1786 after the burning of Ayutthaya. But the current kingdom of Rattanakosin did not begin until 1782 when the capitol city was moved across the river by Rama I. Over the 200 years or so the city has grown to become the political, social and economic centers of not only Thailand but Indonesia and all of south east Asia. Bangkok is the 22nd largest city in the world with more than 8 million residence officially and probably more like 15 million unofficially. Bangkok is a little over 600 square miles making it one of the largest cities in the world. The river that runs through Bangkok is the main geographical feature of the area. Bangkok is referred to the Venice of the east as the number of canal and waterways that cross the city. Bangkok is situated in a tropical climate, frequently hot and usually very humid with frequent rain in the winter. bangkok sits just 6 and a half feet above sea level which cause problems with flooding during the rainy seasons. Government is trying to deal with this situation by building higher banks along canals and river sides. The city sits entirely on a swamp and is thought to be sinking by 2 inches a year. The hottest recorded temperature in Bangkok is 105 the lowest was 49 degrees this was in January of 1924.
