Singapore’s Flesh Imp

On the lookout for the perfect five-star hotel?  Singapore has an awful lot to offer.  Rich in history and in urban cool, Singapore’s reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities is certainly well earned.  There is something for everyone here, and it’s easy to find.  Excellent shopping in a globally-connected village, fantastic restaurants in one of the world’s most multicultural cities, and beautiful views of city scape and water, all combine to make a very heady and pleasant experience.

One of the coolest places for fresh urban fashion gear is Singapore’s Flesh Imp.  The name is two interesting ideas:  Flesh refers to the depth beneath the layer of clothes, that it is more than skin deep.  Imp is the devilish spirit that they want to invoke as being a sensibility that runs counter to the conservative traditional culture.  This store, with a few locations in Singapore, caters to the young and the hip.  They sell women’s and men’s clothing, and very stylishly too.  They’re not an outlet, they are also their own independent clothing label, so you can be sure that the clothes you’re buying are original and well-constructed.  The designs are often collaborations between their own designers and other internationally-known designers.  It’s a very sophisticated strategy that insures them a place on the global stage.  Not that they need the insurance.  The quality of the design speaks for itself, and will certainly strike the window-shopper here.

One of their goals is to really speak to street culture in Singapore, as well as connect with the fashion world at large.  This also shouldn’t be a problem.  With collaborations with Bigfoot, DevilRobots, and Sam Flores, the designers at Flesh Imp have already made an impact on culture.  But speaking to the locals in Singapore really is the focus.  It’s a small country, but its technological savvy puts it in an interesting space.  If so much of global culture is influenced by the internet, it might not be the size of the city, but its capacities for connectivity, that will determine its place in cultural change.  Singapore has already made itself known as a place for interesting and cutting edge design, so this might be just another step toward taking its rightful place in the world.  Style-wise, the future looks bright.

Next to Normal in New York

New York is one of the United State’s premiere theatre cities. It attracts many people to its Broadway productions, whether they’re coming from out of state or just around the corner. Next to Normal is one of its current musical hits and was just nominated for 11 Tony Awards. Those that it one include Best Orchestration, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, and Best Original Score. Tourists visiting the city often enjoy dinner in one of the best restaurants New York City before attending one of its great productions.

Next to Normal was written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. Kitt wrote the music and Yorkey wrote the lyrics and book. The musical story deals with a mother struggling with Bi-Polar disorder, and its effects on the family. Some of the main themes presented in it are substance abuse, suicide, grief and loss and ethical aspects of psychiatry. These are pretty difficult subjects for a musical to tackle, though it does so effectively and its popularity helps to bring some of these topics into mainstream awareness and discussion. The musical debuted Off-Broadway in 2008 and received critical acclaim and won awards. It was then moved to the Arena Stage in Arlington, Virginia, before opening on Broadway in April of this year.

Alice Ripley stars as the woman who struggles with Bi-Polar disorder and her performance won the Best Leading Actress in a Musical award. She had also won the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Actress for its Off-Broadway premiere. Michael Starobin and Tom Kitt did the orchestration, which also won the Tony. It was nominated for the Best Musical Award, though the production lost to Billy Elliot, The Musical, which is another current hit and took home numerous awards that evening. Next to Normal is playing at the Booth Theatre on West 45th Street, and was directed by Michael Greif. Greif has achieved previous acclaim for his direction of Rent and Grey Gardens.

The Settlement of Mauritius

There was a long period of time before settlers finally colonized the island of Mauritius.  Luxury hotel chains now dot the beaches that were once uninhabited.  Sailors from Arabia were seemingly the first to discover the island in the 9th Century, however there were no humans living there and at the time the island was covered in thick forest.  Early in the 16th Century, Portuguese sailors working trade routes to India also landed on the island, but found it uninteresting, and left the island as well, choosing instead to settle along the coasts of Mozambique.  It was not until the end of the 16th Century that permanent residents colonized Mauritius.  It was the commander of a Dutch fleet of ships that claimed the island, landing in a bay that is now Grand Port.  The Dutch remained on Mauritius for just over one hundred years, deciding that it was too hard to survive they left for the Cape of South Africa.  During that time, they hunted the dodo bird to extinction, but had introduced other animals, such as monkeys and deer, as well as the sugar cane. When the Dutch had first settled the island, they also brought slaves with them from Madagascar.  Java criminals were also sent to the island.  Both of these populations remained on the island after the Dutch left for South Africa, living in the mountains.  But it was not long before the country of France took possession, the Dutch left in 1710, and French moved in during 1715.  But again, living on the island at that time was not easy, and the French began leaving just a short fifteen years after they had moved in.  It was not until a British Captain settled there in 1721 that the island truly started to be cultivated and developed.  Oxen were introduced to help with the working of the fields, as well as mango trees, cotton plants, coffee beans and more sugar canes.  By 1744 the industry of sugar was one of the main sources of economy for the island.  Many of the building constructed during that time are still on the island today, as the Governmental Building which is located in the now famous attraction, the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens.  This island is now a major tourist destination, filled with luxurious hotels along pristine beaches.

Farms and waters of Formentera

When we first came to live in Formentera , we soon noticed the ubiquitous presence of sheep, coupled with a noticeable absence of cows. As a consequence fresh milk and other dairy products are hard to find. Of course, after a few months, we came across the occasional dairy farm, but they are definitely few and far in-between. Milk and butter are not a traditional part of the daily food intake of the locals, but thanks to the booming tourist industry, Formentera ferry’s a constant flow of fresh produce and milk products. In commercial quantities, cheese is chiefly imported in from the island of Menorca or from the north of Spain. Some cheese is produce locally, and often blended with goat milk, which is uniquely Formentera.

Now that we live on the island of Formentera for a year, it’s interesting to find and ever present importance of drinking water. Here we are surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, which is a lot of water. But, we don not live right next to the sea, most residence don’t; coastal area are the domain of all Hotels Formentera . Locals rarely get to see the sea on a daily basis. But, for the occasion of the World Day for Water which is celebrated today because of the United Nations initiative in 1993.

Reservoirs are currently nearly full to capacity. But, in order to avoid a shortage of drinking water in the future, the Govern Balear has made substantial investments over the last few years in water desalination plants. The Balearic government also announced plans to invest large amounts of money in waste-water treatment between now and 2015, thanks in part to a substantial aid from the central government in Madrid.  The daily irrigation of tourist facilities, public green zones and a smattering of golf courses consume an unbelievable amount of water. Good water practices seems paramount because our lives here on this amazing island, depends upon water, the small farm and the tourist industry bringing prosperity.

Soaps of Ramadan

Ramadan is the holiest month for Muslims around the world. Ramadan is a time to fast, cleanse the sould and surrender to God. But, in the Middle East, a new trend of how to observe this holiest of months. Arab channels’ soap operas, which are offered by hundreds of Hotels Dubai UAE , contain tantalizing twists to entertain one through the entire month of Ramadan.

Ramadan creates big bucks for Arab satellite channels. Millions of dollars are spent on special programming, much of it comparable to Western soap operas , to entertain en mass during the sunrise to sunset fasting and cleansing. One program, ‘Baab El-Hara’ (The Neighborhood Gate), offers intense drama focused on a family fued. A husband and his pregnant wife are separated as the in-laws fight it out with each other trying to teach the other a lesson. The wife misses her husband and wants to go back to him. He kisses his mother’s hand and promises her he’ll do only what she wants.

The soaps showcase social traditions mixed with melodramatic characters and enought plot twists that last the entire month of Ramadan. But, it’s not all soap opera’s, there is also a smattering of history programs propagating the glorious days of Islamic and Arabic past eras. The history channels showcase ancient Arabic tribal costumes, complete with the traditional headdress with a dagger on the side and tons of camels being ridden everywhere in the desert.

But during the soap opera boom, Ramadan has become the subject of heated debates on the news channels. People have expressed serious concerns that sitting in front of a television set all day doesn’t go well with the spirit of the month. Muslims are supposed to be contemplating and meditating, not channel surfing. The Dubai news channel, Al-Arabiya , found a unique way to entertain the viewers by airing a documentary where the host walks in the footspets of the prophet Mohammed as was written about in the Quran. Al-Araiya also offers a daily lighter side of Ramadan, focusing on the people’s health during the fasting with recommendations on the best meals to eat and the calories they contain. So, if a Muslim decides to break from their fast, there is a neighborhood cafe willing to serve them a traditional shisha smoke and a light meal served with a side of satellite channels playing Dubai’s most popular soap.

The Rafael Nadal injury report

With Wimbledon a mere weeks away and his loss in the French Open where he was the reigning champion, tennis fans are worried about Rafael Nadal and his injury status.

He pulled out of the AEGON Championships, which is a warm-up for Wimbledon, citing knee injury.

He has been quoted on his official website saying that he has been playing with pain in his knees for months and could simply not take the torture of it anymore.

His site says he will travel to England on June 16th, 2009. This is just a mere six days before the Championships at Wimbledon begin on June 22nd.

He is quoted as saying he will be spending the weeks ahead doing physiotherapy treatments and recovery work on the specific muscle areas that seem to be damaged.

For you doctors or aspiring ones, his doctor has sad that Nadal is suffering from insertion tendonitis in both of his knee caps and he has a light osseous edema.

Besides the physical treatment, Nadal will also be taking anti-inflammatories. After his treatment, he is looking to get back into training right away.

This is a difficult call, is this kind of aggressive treatment and then right back into training really a good idea for Rafael Nadal? I know its Wimbledon but this could also hurt the rest of his career if you goes too much too fast.

Knees are not something to mess around with, especially for a tennis player.  The Spanish tennis sensation is still so young, only 23 years old and I would hate to see him sacrifice the rest of his career just for a chance to defend his title at this year’s Wimbledon. Is it really worth it for him to rehab so quickly if he is thinking in the scope of his entire year? Cross your fingers tennis fans!

Making Johannesburg Meatloaf

I was totally surprised when I saw Meatloaf on the menu at a restaurant of the Johannesburg Boutique Hotels . When I inquired as to why an staple American dish was being served in India, I was treated to a visit at my table by the American born chef. He was happy to explain to me how the meat loaf was prepared. It begins, he said, with a high grade ground chuck combining veal and pork. He said some people have issues with the veal, but if he was asked to use a substitute he would refuse. He said for a good meatloaf the rule of thumb is two parts ground beef, which adds the texture, for every part pork or veal.

As I was eating my second delicious slice of his beautifully prepared meatloaf, he told me that it’s the filler which will stretch the meat and fluff the loaf. Depending on what corner of the country one hails from, this part, the filler, gets personal. He said Corn bread is big in the South; oats if one comes from New England and Stove Top Stuffing , cornflakes and croutons if I lived in the Midwest. He said his mother, born Pennsylvania Dutch and his dad a Sicilian would use crusty Italian bread as the filler.

He was happy that I had ordered the meatloaf and told me whether I craved it or dread it, meatloaf will forever be a family’s embarrassment. Permanently saddled with the reputation of being a family’s meal of last resort . Actually, I responded, for me the real fear of making an awesome meatloaf is all the chopping and mixing that’s required. As I finished wolfing down my third slice, I added, that you can’t taste it until it’s done which turned me off. He said, for him, that’s exactly where it gets exciting. The mystery of not knowing how it’s going to turn out.
